Tree Surgery FAQs | Expert Advice from Parkscape Arborists

Thinking about having a tree removed or reduced? Not sure if it's necessary, legal, or how it all works? Below are the most commonly asked questions we hear at Parkscape - designed to help homeowners, landlords and property managers across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire make informed, safe decisions.

How do I know if my tree needs cutting down?

There are several signs a tree may need to be removed:

  • The tree is dead or dying, with brittle branches and sparse leaves.

  • You notice fungus or mushrooms growing around the trunk or roots.

  • The tree is leaning dangerously, showing cracks, or has root damage.

  • It’s growing too close to a house, power lines, or underground services.

If you're unsure, we offer free tree health assessments across Bedfordshire and beyond. Our certified arborists can evaluate the condition and recommend the best course of action.

My tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). What should I do?

If your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must apply for consent from your local council before any work takes place — including pruning or removal. At Parkscape, we handle the TPO application process on your behalf, including:

  • Submitting necessary documents and method statements.

  • Liaising with council tree officers.

  • Providing you with updates throughout.

This ensures full legal compliance and avoids fines of up to £20,000 or more.

My tree is in a Conservation Area. What should I do?

If your tree is located within a Conservation Area, you are legally required to give your local council six weeks’ notice before starting any work. Parkscape provides a full Conservation Area notification service to:

  • Identify whether your tree falls under protected status.

  • Submit notice and details to the planning authority.

  • Proceed with work only once formal approval is granted.

We take care of the paperwork so you can avoid legal issues and delays.

What is the initial process when hiring a tree surgeon?

At Parkscape, our tree surgery process begins with a free, no-obligation site visit. Here's how it works: Site assessment – We inspect the tree’s health, location, and surrounding risks.

  • Check for TPO/Conservation status – We determine if permissions are needed.

  • Tailored quote – We provide a detailed written quotation.

  • Method statement & risk assessment – Our team prepares everything for a safe and efficient job.

What does the tree reduction or removal process typically involve?

Here’s what you can expect when Parkscape carries out a tree reduction or removal:

  • Scheduled Arrival – We will arrive at the site of reduction or removal as agreed.

  • Climbing or machinery – Depending on access, any ropes or and equipment is set up.

  • Sectional dismantling – The tree is carefully reduced from top to bottom.

  • Stump grinding – If requested, the remaining stump is removed below ground level.

  • Full clean-up – We remove all branches, leaves, and logs unless you want to keep them.

This process is designed for minimal disruption and maximum safety.

How long does tree surgery take?

The duration depends on the size and complexity of the tree, as well as access. As a general guide:

  • Small tree removal: 1–2 hours

  • Medium-sized reduction: Half day

  • Large felling + stump grinding: 1–2 full days

We'll give you a clear timeline with your quote.

What happens to the waste after removal?

Parkscape includes full green waste removal as part of every job. Here’s what we do:

  • Branches are chipped and recycled into mulch.

  • Wood is cut into logs for firewood (you can keep them if you like!).

  • Leaves and debris are swept, collected and removed.

  • We leave your site clean, tidy and safe.
